Rock Band Creator at SVA

Don't miss the upcoming Career Development Evening Event:

Creator of Rock Band visits SVA!

Friday, April 9, 2010
3:00 p.m.
136 West 21st Street, Classroom 631-F

Harmonix Music Systems is the creator of the smash hits Rock Band 1 & 2 and The Beatles Rock Band. Harmonix has built a world class art studio with traditional artists; painters, graphic designers, illustrators, sculptors, photographers, film and video artists and digital artists.

Jason Arnone, Art Manager at Harmonix, is visiting SVA to talk about the various art department roles and show the behind-the-scenes creative process from concept, production to final execution. With every artist's role, Jason will draw connections between the artist in school and the professional game artist. You will learn first hand how your study of foundation skills will benefit you in any commercial art application, not just in games.

Space is limited. RSVP by logging on to www.collegecentral.com/sva and viewing "Upcoming Events & Programs" on your home page.

it's been too long.

i haven't been arting for too many reasons. but I wanted to drop a note here about this site i have recently learned of:

The Grid System is an incredibly useful and interesting site about grids. grids make the world go, as any comics artist would know first hand.

i think seeing the philosophy behind their use in other fields is pretty valuable. also directly applicable to all the web stuff today's cartoonist/illustrator is pretty much obligated to do.

happy holidays, and may all your type adhere to a baseline grid.

a fancy thing for your website perhaps...

fancy-fruits.png

FancyZoom is a lightweight javascript that enlarges images inline. there are some examples at the link.
it took me less than a minute to get it up and running on my site.

i've never been crazy about the behavior of opening images on websites. either it takes you away from the page you were on and forces you to hit the back button, or it opens up an additional window which is plain rude.

i was using the lightbox js on my website, but i was never satisfied about the default functionality. it had a cool feature for viewing sequences of images, but i felt the effect was too severe for one at a time viewing. i'm sure it's possible to alter the lightbox script to suit different needs, but that's outside my code monkey abilities.

anyway i like FancyZoom. it's from Cabel Sasser of Panic software. (if you're using a mac and maintaining a website, i highly recommend you give Coda a try. what little coding i am capable of i taught myself using Coda.) FZ is free to use for non commercial websites. if you make money off your site (i sure as hell don't) it's a one time fee of 39 bones. though i'll gladly fork over the money if things get rolling over at inksktink.net. ha.

apparently FancyZoom has issues in IE 6 (because IE 6 is terrible), but for reals... nobody worth knowing uses IE 6 anymore.

Pick A Square

http://patchblox.com/

Simply pick a patch, upload a 50x 50 gif and add a hyper link. You can even do an image made up of several squares.

I've gotten a bunch of hits on my blog from this. So I made second one, made up of 2 squares, for my site.

Use it. Or don't. What do I care.

Thomas Pitilli in Time Out New York

Tom got one of his awesome illustrations printed in Time Out New York. Unfortunately, they don't sell Time Out New York in Battle Ground, Washington, but I can view a dinky digital version here:

And I'm sure he'll blog about it, right?

Great work Tom!

Computer Generated Art

This site has some really cool Flash generated stuff. A lot of the scripts are Open Source and available for download. Most of this stuff is beyond my comprehension of ActionScript, but it's really cool to see what can be done with it.
